PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Baseball returned to the friendly confines of the North Field on Tuesday afternoon for another battle with Pasadena neighbor Providence Christian College, overcoming a sizable deficit to win a nail-biter of a game.
The visiting Sea Beggars made a statement right out of the gate, batting around and scoring six runs before the Beavers could record a third out, but Caltech calmly fought back with runs in four of the following five innings to take the lead while holding Providence Christian scoreless until the sixth inning.
Senior
Leo Jenkins (New York, N.Y. / Beacon) put Caltech on the board in the bottom of the second inning, driven home by two-RBI single by two-way sophomore
Brendan Flaherty (Narragansett, RI / Lake Forest Academy) that also drove home classmate
Jacob Alderete (Murrieta, Calif. / Murrieta Mesa). Alderete then took a knock for the team in the next inning, earning an RBI as a hit batsman with the bases loaded to score first-year
Kailen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School).
Hargenrader then sparked a three-run fourth inning, pulling a single between first and second base and inducing a defensive error to allow
Garrett Knuf to score. Kailen tallied two more hits in the ballgame, including the eventual game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring Knuf home again.
Ryan Wong (Chicago / Lane Tech College Prep) picked up his first collegiate pitching win, throwing effectively through the seventh and eighth innings, allowing just one unearned run and one base hit.
Cameron McNamee moved from first base to the pitcher's mound in the ninth inning to earn his second save of the year.
Other key moments highlighted the exciting day, including Aiden Hamner (Bettendorf, Iowa / Bettendorf) recording his first hit as a Beaver in the fifth inning, and a pinch-hit single by
Sayuj Choudhari (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) in the sixth.
"Great, gritty win," Head Coach
Kevin Whitehead said after the come-from-behind triumph. "A ton of guys contributed. It was gratifying to see continued hard work pay off for many role players."
The Beavers will return to SCIAC play on Thursday, hosting the Saghehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a 3pm game. Follow along live at
