PASADENA and ORANGE, Calif. – The Caltech Beavers continued battling through their 2024 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule this weekend, taking on the Chapman University Panthers in a Friday home game at Caltech's North Field followed by a Saturday doubleheader at Hart Park in the City of Orange.
Game 1: Chapman 12 @ Caltech 0 (7 inn.)
The Beavers kicked off the Spring Orange Out Weekend with one of their highest-attended games of the season, taking on a tough Chapman squad.
Sophomore
Mark Hu (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) highlighted with a pair of base hits, and rookie
Kailen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School), junior
Edward Speer (Austin, Texas / Leander) and senior
Leo Jenkins also connected for singles. Jenkins also turned a highlight-reel lineout double play with junior
Cameron McNamee (Great Falls, Mont. / Great Falls) to end the fourth inning.
Game 2: Caltech 0 @ Chapman 11 (7 inn.)
Hu knocked another single in the early game of the doubleheader, accompanied by junior
Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland) and sophomore
Aidan Hamner (Bettendorf, Iowa / Bettendorf) belted a double. McNamee and Jenkins shared pitching duties and struck out five Panthers.
Game 3: Caltech 1 @ Chapman 4
Caltech's defense again turned an inning-ending double play in the bottom of the third, senior
Patrick Donohoe (New York, N.Y. / Bronx School of Science) combining with Hu and McNamee for two critical outs. The Beavers got on the board in the fifth inning, capitalizing on Jenkins' leadoff single as Donohoe followed with a double and Speer drove home Jenkins with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore pitcher
Brendan Flaherty (Narragansett, RI / Lake Forest Academy) tossed a quality start, allowing just three unearned runs in six innings along with a trio of strikeouts.
Head Coach
Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers will next face the Whittier College Poets on Friday, April 19 on the road before closing out the three-game series with a Saturday, April 20 doubleheader at home.
