REDLANDS, Calif. — The No. 29 Caltech men's tennis team took on the No. 17 University of Redlands Bulldogs on Friday in an early evening matchup on the road.
The contest began with doubles play where sophomore
Andrew Zabelo (Florham Park, N.J. / Newark Academy) and first-year
Tejas Ram (Allen, Texas / Allen) came together for a strong 8-6 victory in the third position. It was the third straight doubles victory for the two Beavers, who picked up their fourth overall win together.
Seniors
Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) and
Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson HS for Science & Technology) battled valiantly on Court 1 in an incredibly close match that required a tiebreak; the Beavers fell just narrowly as Redlands' best squeaked out the 8-7 (7-4) win. It was an exceptionally high-level tennis match, with both duos ranking in the top-4 of all doubles pairings in the region.
Rookie
Eric He (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) impressed as he picked up a strong 6-4, 6-4 singles win in his fourth-ever match from the fourth position. The first-year now improves to 12-4 on the season in singles action.
First-year
Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne (Paris / Lycée Jean de La Fontaine) went the distance from the second spot in a lengthy three-set battle. The Beaver dropped the first set, 1-6, though he stormed back to a significant 6-4 win in the second before ultimately falling in the third, 3-6.
Ram also went three sets after taking the first, 6-4, before his opponent took the second and third sets, 6-0, 6-2.
The Beavers will take a brief rest before facing off against the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University this Saturday, Apr. 20 at 10 a.m. on the road. Follow along online at
