PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech men's tennis team continued its 2024 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) campaign on a warm Tuesday afternoon on its home courts.
Denying the guests the Doubles sweep was the partnership of seniors
Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. Lexington) and
Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science), who broke their opponents' serve to open the match. Both pairs continued scoring on their turns to serve until the the Beaver duo claimed the match point with another break, winning 8-5 in Doubles #1.
Not willing to let Chapman pick up steam after winning the first match of the singles session, the two steamrolled their Panther rivals to even the overall match at 3-3. Wen responded with a clinical 6-1, 6-2 win on Court 4 moments before McCandless sealed his #2 Singles match with matching 6-1 set scores.
The two teams traded singles points again, with Chapman picking up a point on Court 3 just a few minutes before Caltech rookie
Eric He (Martinsville, N.J. Bridgewater Raritan) fought back after split sets to tie things up at 4-4, winning #5 singles 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The comeback victory was He's 10th singles victory of the 2024 season and second in conference play.
