PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech men's soccer team showed out against Albion College with a dominant 4-0 win and back-to-back shutout victories this weekend.
The Beavers' strong performance was led by junior midfielder
Etienne Casanova (San Jose, Calif. / Saratoga), who tallied two goals and assisted twice to senior forward
Andy Dimnaku (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) who netted two goals of his own.
Caltech scored quickly as Casanova found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the game. After his first shot was blocked, Casanova corraled his own rebound and buried his second attempt.
The Beavers' dynamic offense was complimented well with another strong performance from goalkeepers
Ethan Hamel (Portola Valley, Calif. / Woodside) who played the first half and collected four saves, and
Alex Crowley (Atlanta / Paideia) who played the second half. While the Britons attempted 15 shots, only five were on goal as the Caltech backline held them to mostly long-range attempts and made one save behind Crowley in the waning minutes.
Caltech's offense picked up in the second half with eight more shots for a game total of 15. Dimnaku found the back of the net in the 54th minute with Casanova's assist, and then Casanova drew a foul for a penalty kick seven minutes later. He would convert from the spot for his second goal of the contest and the Beavers' third. Casanova again dished to Dimnaku in the 68th minute, who beat the goalkeeper and gave Caltech a commanding 4-0 advantage.
"I'm very happy with our opening weekend," Head Coach
Duncan Gillis said. "The boys got us off to a great start with two wins and two clean sheets. We had contributions from a lot of guys today, and we are excited to keep building with some more good non-conference matchups next week"
Gillis and the Beavers will return to the North Field on Friday, Sep. 6 to face Southern California Leadership University.
