Caltech Women's Soccer Secures First Win of the Season

PASADENA, Calif. - The Caltech women's soccer team captured its first win of the season and Head Coach Emmy Meyring's first as a Beaver on Saturday afternoon. Taking on the visiting Life Pacific University, sophomore midfielder Marie Choi-Schattle (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) delivered a hat trick to help lead the team to victory.

The Beavers were aggressive from the beginning, getting their first shot on net in the third minute of play. A little over a minute later the team persisted with senior forward Jennifer Solgaard (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) dishing a pass to Choi-Schattle who fired it into the back of the net from the far left side of the box, earning the Beavers the opening goal and Solgaard her first of two assists on the day. Caltech kept the pressure up and in the 14th minute Solgaard ripped a shot from the right wing, striking the post and creating a frenzy in front of the net that Choi-Schattle put away for her second goal of the day and a 2-0 Caltech lead.

The two teams battled closely while Caltech created more offensive opportunities with 14 shots and seven on goal to the Warriors one in the first half of play. The Beavers carried the two goal lead into halftime.

The Beavers came into the second half looking to build on their lead and continue to shutdown Pacific Life's offense. Both squads tightened up defensively in the early part of the half limiting gaps and scoring chances. The Beavers would finally break through with 23 minutes remaining in the half when the duo of Solgaard and Choi-Schattle connected once again with Choi-Schattle receiving an assist from the left side of the box and scoring for the third time adding to her incredible showing.

Caltech held strong defensively only allowing six shots in the second half. The Warriors would score a goal in the 71st minute off a shot by Mercedes Sibrian, but this would prove to be too little, too late, as the Beavers held onto the 3-1 lead and secured the win.

"It was great to end the non-conference season with a win," Coach Meyring said. "All the team's work is coming together and we're excited to see what we can do this season!"

Meyring and the Beavers will look to build on the early win as they hit the road to face SCIAC rival Occidental College on Wednesday, Sep. 17 at 7 p.m.
