Men's Water Polo Faces Whittier and Austin in Road Doubleheader

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech men's water polo team hit the road on Saturday as they took on No. 6 Whittier College and Austin College in a doubleheader matchup.

The Beavers matched up with the nationally-ranked Whittier to start off the day, falling to the hosts by a score of 20-6. After a slow start the Beavers picked it up in the second quarter, with junior center Bram Schork (Villanova, Pa. / The Haverford School) ultimately leading the squad with four goals and one assist. Utility graduate student Andrés Heredia (San Diego / Francis Parker) netted a goal along with sophomore attacker Alexi Stapf (Santa Barbara, Calif. / San Marcos). Stapf tied for the match-high in assists among any player on both teams, with two.

The team fought hard throughout and finished the match by putting together a six goal second half performance and built momentum as they prepared for their second match of the day.

The Austin College Kangaroos were the second opponent of the day for the Beavers, who came up just short with a 12-8 defeat with many key contributions from the squad that kept them in the game. On the offensive side, Heredia and Schork tallied another two goals each and combined for half of the Beavers' goals. Stapf found the back of the net again for his second goal on the overall day while sophomore utility Eric Verheyden (Bend, Ore. / Summit), sophomore attacker Joshua Braun (Bakersfield, Calif. / Garces Memorial), and sophomore attacker Heramba Patil (Bellevue, Wash. Interlake) each netted a single goal.

Goalkeeper Sujit Iyer (Marietta, Ga. Wheeler) totaled for a combined 11 impact saves between the two matches, with six coming versus Austin.

The Beavers outscored the Kangaroos in the second half, 5-4; the group forced Austin into 14 exclusions.

Caltech looks to bounce back in its next matchup as they host Occidental College on Sep. 28 at 11:00 a.m. Cheer on the team in person and follow along online at GoCaltech.com/coverage.
