Caltech Women's Volleyball faced the Whittier Poets in Braun Gymnasium Oct. 14, taking a set against the Poets and putting up some incredible statistical performances.
Senior Giulia Murgia (Iglesias, Italy / Istituto di Istruzione Superiore G. Asproni) kept rallies alive for the Beavers with an incredible 30 digs in the match marking a new career high. The performance not only led all players in the match, but was the sixth-best all-time in Caltech program history despite the match only being four sets. The night was especially special considering Murgia is a setter, not a libero.
Sophomore Ailsa Shen (Calgary, Alberta / Western Canada HS) was effective at turning digs into points for the Beavers with 36 assists in the match to lead all players. First-year Rena Zheng helped lead the attack with a career-high 13 kills. Alize Bakker (Portland, Ore. / Westview) also featured heavily in the offense with 13 kills of her own.
Three of Bakker's kills came as part of a 4-0 Beaver run to start the third set. Starting at 21-19 in the third set, Bakker went on a service run of three Caltech points culminating in an ace to put the set out of reach.
First-year Veda Chennupati (Collierville, Tenn. / Collierville High School) was a presence at the net for the Beavers, leading the team with a career-high four total blocks.
Caltech travels to Claremont to face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday, Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
