Women's Basketball Completes Second Half Comeback vs Pomona-Pitzer

PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Women's Basketball completed the come-from-behind win on Wednesday defeating Pomona-Pitzer 75-60.

The first half did not go the Beavers' way. Caltech entered the half trailing by five, but the Beavers' offense came to play in the second half. Led by seniors Kodie Vondra (Livingston, Mont. / Park) and Asmat Taunque (Chandigarh, India / The Lawrenceville School), the Beavers stormed back on the combined 16 points from Vondra and Taunque in the third quarter.

While Caltech shot an efficient 52% from the field in the third quarter, the defense made it a problem for Pomona-Pitzer, turning them over five times in the third quarter alone to flip the game. Kodie Vondra led the way defensively for the Beavers, picking up four steals and two blocks, in addition to her 14 points and eight rebounds.

In the fourth quarter, it was first-year guard Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills), who led the Beavers in scoring with 19 points, on an impressive 11-14 from the free-throw line. Phaychanpheng scored 13 of her 19 points in the 4th quarter to help seal the comeback win for Caltech.

Asmat Taunque recorded her first collegiate double-double finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds on an efficient 6-10 from the field. Taunque set career highs in points, rebounds, field goals made, and field goals attempted in what was a career game for her.

It was a team effort for the Beavers in this win with four players reaching double digits in the points column. The aforementioned Vondra, Taunque, and Phaychanpheng all reached the mark as well as first-year guard Zeynep Goktepe (Istanbul, Turkey / The MacDuffie School) who finished the game with 16 points, four rebounds, and a team-high four assists.

Head Coach Annie Tarakchian and Caltech's next game is on Saturday when they travel to take on the La Verne University Leopards. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
