CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Caltech women's basketball team visited Pomona-Pitzer for a Monday night matchup against a tough SCIAC opponent.
The game was hotly contested in the first quarter, the Beavers able to keep up the pace with the Sagehens through the scoring efforts of senior
Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) and first-year
Zeynep Goktepe (Istanbul, Turkey / The MacDuffie School). The two would later combine for a total of 34 points by the end of the night.
Tight defense paired well with this two-headed attack to keep the game within four points heading into the second quarter. It was a back-and-forth matchup throughout the quarter as Caltech was able to stay within an arm's reach of Pomona-Pitzer, tying the score twice as the game went on. With the score at 18-14, the Sagehens led the Beavers by a whisker heading into the second quarter.
Despite a solid performance from the defense in the first, Pomona-Pitzer began to pull away in the second and third quarters. Edwards and Goktepe would continue to be the driving force of the Caltech offense, aided by rookie
Carolyn Ruan (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) through each of the team's assists, and fellow senior
Maria Vazhaeparambil (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School) lending an additional five rebounds to Edward's nine throughout the game.
The fourth quarter would see Caltech return to how they played in the first quarter, clamping up on defense and spreading the ball around for a more balanced attack. However as the final minutes ticked down it was too little too late for the Beavers, as they fell by a final score of 75 - 42 to the Sagehens.
Head Coach
Annie Tarakchian and the Beavers will return home on Saturday, Feb. 8 to host the Chapman University Panthers at 2 p.m.
