PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech women's water polo team returned home to Braun Pool on Tuesday night to host the Wolverines of Grove City College (Grove City, Penn.), putting forth an outstanding effort and earning a five-goal win over the guests.
The Beavers struck first and held the Wolverines scoreless in the first quarter, eventually outscoring them 7-3 in the first half. Sophomore
Emma Titus (Hood River, Ore. / Hood River Valley) opened up the scoring with two goals in the first three minutes, followed by junior
Mia Mutadich (London, U.K. / Notting Hill and Earling) with 3:30 to go in the opening frame.
Grove City held pace with the Beavers during the second quarter, finally getting on the scoreboard at the 5:40 mark, but junior
Maya Dickson (Atlanta, Ga. / North Atlanta), first-year
Yolotzin Subdias (Los Angeles / Eagle Rock), Titus and Mutadich all tallied goals to build up a four-goal lead by halftime.
The visitors pulled together a five-goal run over the course of three and a half minutes in the third quarter, pulling within a goal of the Beavers before Mutadich stopped their momentum, drawing a critical exclusion and then quickly scoring on the advantage.
Senior
Charlotte Zhang (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) found the back of the net early in the final frame to extend Caltech's lead, with junior
Madelyn Gilbert (Clovis, Calif. / Clovis East) netting a pair as well to give Caltech a five-goal cushion. Grove City managed one last goal with a minute to go, but Subdias replied in the waning seconds with her third goal in front of an energetic crowd.
The balanced offense saw Mutidich, Subdias, Titus and Dickson all score three goals, while Gilbert contributed a game-high three assists. On the other side, Dickson's four steals and Subdias's propensity to draw exclusion fouls gave Caltech even more chances to score.
