PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech Women's Water Polo team hosted SCIAC rival and top-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for both teams' second in-conference game of the season on Saturday morning.
The Beavers kept a tight game throughout the first quarter, as they limited Pomona-Pitzer to three scores thanks to the defensive performance of junior goalkeeper Mahi Ravi (Mountain View, Calif. / Saratoga).
Caltech began its strongest offensive quarter in the second with a sprint win by sophomore attacker Emma Titus (Hood River, Ore. / Hood River Valley). Later on in the quarter, the Beavers put themselves on the board with a strike to the cage by junior attacker Madelyn Gilbert (Clovis, Calif. / Clovis East), assisted by fellow junior Mia Mutadich (London, U.K. / Notting Hill and Earling). Just over a minute and a half later, Mutadich herself would dart in a spectacular behind-the-back goal with an assist from first year Stephanie Wallen (Miami, Fla. / Ransom Everglades).
Heading into the third quarter, Caltech aimed to keep up its offensive momentum, aided by Mahi Ravi making numerous close-range saves to keep the Sahehens at bay.
The fourth quarter kicked off with yet another explosive sprint from Titus, claiming the first possession for Caltech and swiftly setting up for a prolonged attack on the Pomona-Pitzer net. The quarter saw the Beavers clamp up tightly on defense, constantly reclaiming the ball on turnovers and assaulting the cage on the other side. That assault would eventually bear fruit with a successful five meter penalty attempt by junior Maya Dickson (Atlanta, Ga. / North Atlanta), who also concluded the game leading the team in steals on defense.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers are set to host the Chapman University Panthers back at home at the Braun Pool, March 12 at 7 p.m.
