ORANGE, Calif.
– Caltech Women's Tennis picked up its first in-conference victory of the its 2025 SCIAC campaign Friday evening on the home courts of the Chapman University Panthers, outlasting the hosts in a back-and-forth match.
Senior Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) and first-year Carissa Gerung (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) struck first with a commanding 6-1 set win in #1 Doubles, for the duo's fourth win of the season, second in a row and second in SCIAC play this year. Unfortunately, Chapman picked up wins in the second and third positions to claim the doubles point.
Arora wasted no time evening the match with the first match point of the singles session, cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 win on Court 4. However, the Panthers replied with wins on 5 and 6, bringing them just one point away from their first SCIAC dual match win of the season.
But the Beavers were not done. Regional No. 14 and Caltech senior Yoyo Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) defeated her opponent in the first position by matching 6-4 sets to make it a 3-2 Chapman lead. Gerung followed on Court 3 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 line, evening the day at 3-3 and leaving the decision up to the #2 Singles outcome.
It was senior Payal Patel who outlasted her Panther rival, rebounding after a close second set to win 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, her third win at the second position lifting the Beavers to a 7-4 season record.
