Flaherty Shines in Baseball Shootout with Whittier

PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech impressed on offense and on the mound Friday, plating six runs against Whittier College while stemming the Poet offense for the majority of the game.

Junior pitcher Brendan Flaherty (Narragansett, RI. / Lake Forest Academy) provided the Beavers with excellent long-relief Friday as the Poets scored runs in only one inning while he stood on the mound. The explosive righty tossed with a composed swagger, pitching himself out of jams in the third and sixth innings, starting with a key strikeout to end the third with the tying run 90 feet from home plate.

Flaherty has proven himself invaluable to the Beavers this season. He has now pitched at least 6.1 innings in each of his last five appearances, dating back to March 14 vs Dickinson.  Flaherty's 3.06 ERA leads the team and his decisions account for over half of Caltech's wins.

The Beavers offense supported Flaherty with a solid day against the Poets led by a 4-for-5, two-RBI performance from senior center fielder Jack Fishel (Baltimore Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland). His triple to lead off the fifth inning was his team-leading third of the year. Fishel also accounted for Caltech's final run of the day with a single to left scoring sophomore outfielder Kailen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School).

Junior third baseman Mark Hu (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) also had a two-RBI day against the Poets, his fourth of the season. The infielder opened the Beaver scoring with a team plate appearance in the first inning, driving in first-year infielder William Minatel (Brecksville, Ohio / Brecksville-Broadview Heights). Hu then ensured Fisher's triple translated to a run with a single in the fifth inning.

Hitting was contagious against Whitter on Friday. Senior catcher Edward Speer (Austin, Texas / Leander) and Hargenrader each collected a pair of knocks in front of the Caltech faithful. Hargengrader added to his team lead in RBIs (15) with a second-inning single scoring Speer.

First year RHP/1B Quinn Hartman (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) gave the Beavers a 3-2 lead in the third inning with an infield single scoring Fishel.

The Beavers and Poets will head to Whitter for game two of the weekend series Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m.
