PASADENA, Calif. – With strong defensive prowess and an offense that would not quit, Caltech Women's Soccer came away with a thrilling 1-0 victory Saturday, marking the first time Caltech has defeated the University of Redlands.
The visiting Bulldogs maintained a fierce attack throughout the game, making a total of 28 shots, and 14 shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Haleigh Gardner skillfully managed these attacks, not allowing a single goal from the opposing team. Her 14 saves ties the program's single-game saves record set last year by teammate
Sophia Steven.
Without a single goal for either team in the first half leaving the two tied, the second half began with high stakes for both teams.
Kyla Cook and
Shyna Kashi would lead the Beavers' attack, with Cook making 5 total shots and Kashi making two, each finding the frame once.
With seconds to spare and tensions high in the second half, the
Alexa Baxter played a long ball into the 18-yard box to
Shyna Kashi, who threaded a low shot to the right of the Bulldogs' goalkeeper and into the netting with just over one second to play, igniting her teammates and all the Caltech fans in attendance.
This hair-raising match marks the first victory for Caltech Women's Soccer this season, and for new Head Coach
Scott Wilson it was his first Caltech victory and his first SCIAC win at the helm.
"Phenomenal effort from the players," said Wilson. "They worked extremely hard and produced some high-quality moments throughout the game. As a group they've faced a lot of adversity this year so it's great to see their resilience shine through in each match up. Massive shout out to Shyna, our first-year forward scoring the winner with 1 second left on the clock. What a way to open your Caltech WSOC Account."
The Beavers will continue their season next week, Saturday September 27th, going up against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont, California.
