THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Caltech women's volleyball team continued its 2015 SCIAC campaign on the road Tuesday night, claiming a set and nearly forcing a decisive fifth set against the Cal Lutheran Regals.
The Beavers fought hard in a back-and-forth opening set, stringing together, scoring 12 points on 16 rallies in to turn a 10-8 deficit into a commanding 20-14 lead. While the hosts rallied to tie the score at 20-20, Caltech capitalized on some attack errors by the home team and put them away with kills by
Ailsa Shen and
Rena Zhang to win the set by a 25-21 score.
Cal Lutheran took control in the second set and staved off a late Beaver rally in the third set to flip the match and lead Caltech two sets to one.
But the Beavers weren't done yet, opening up the fourth set with a 9-2 run with kills by
Marissa Till and Zhang, a service ace by
Alize Bakker, and an assisted block by Zhang and
Stephanie Wallen. The Regals battled back to tie the score at 14-14 and then take a 20-19 lead and Caltech responded with a four-point run, but the home side eventually prevailed 27-25 for the match.
Zhang led her team with a dozen kills, followed by Bakker with 10, who led the Beavers with three aces. Wallen dominated at the net with a match-leading five block assists along with a solo block. Shen led both teams with a career-high 25 assists, and
Giulia Murgia contributed a match-high 20 digs to keep the Beavers' chances alive.
