Beaver Men's Water Polo unleashed an offensive barrage in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. Tuesday, defeating the Chaffey College Panthers 17-10 in the opening match of the season.
Sophomore Carl Crum (San Carlos, Calif. / Sacred Heart Preparatory) led all players with six points on a team-high four goals and two assists. He was one of three Caltech players to notch a hat trick in the match. Juniors Axel Haydt (Austin, Texas / Westlake) and Eric Verheyden (Bend, Ore. / Summit) each contributed three goals. Junior Alexi Staph (Santa Barbara, Calif. / San Marcos) orchestrated the offense with a game-high three assists as part of his four points on the day.
Senior goalkeeper Sujit Iyer (Marietta, Ga. / Wheeler) defended the cage with five saves and three steals against the Panthers, keeping the game close early. The Caltech offense built on his effort, pulling away with 11 second-half goals including seven in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Caltech travels to Cypress Calif. for a weekend tournament beginning 10:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5 against San Diego Mesa.
