PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Athletics announces
Madison Quan will serve as the new head coach of the women's basketball program.
Quan brings to the Beavers an extensive résumé of playing, coaching, educational and leadership experiences. She enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Pomona-Pitzer from 2018–20 and 2021–23, graduating from Pitzer College in 2022. One of the most accomplished players in program history, she finished her career ranked sixth in scoring with 1,313 points, fifth in assists with 359, and second in steals with 285. She holds Pomona-Pitzer single-game records for scoring (41 points) and steals (10). Her accomplishments earned her 2023 SCIAC Player of the Year honors, three First-Team All-SCIAC selections, and two D3Hoops.com All-West Region honors.
In addition to her success on the court, Quan has distinguished herself as a leader and scholar. A first-generation college graduate, she earned a bachelor's degree from Pitzer College in Organizational Studies and Environmental Analysis in 2022 before completing a master's degree in Business Management from Claremont Graduate University in 2023. During her collegiate career, she held several leadership positions, including President of the Pitzer Student Impact Council, Athletics Commissioner for the Pitzer Student Senate, and Leadership Chair for the Pomona-Pitzer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
"Taking over this program as the Interim Head Coach was an experience that challenged me and ultimately reminded me why I love coaching," said Quan. "I walked into a situation that required me to grow quickly, find my voice, and learn what it truly means to build a program. Being appointed the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Caltech is incredibly meaningful to me because we now have the opportunity to continue that work and build on what we started. I'm so grateful for the trust Caltech, [Director of Athletics, Recreation and Instruction]
Terry Tumey, and the department has placed in me, and I'm excited for what we can continue to build together.
"As coaches, we get to work with some of the brightest, most driven students in the world. These student-athletes are not only challenging themselves at the highest level academically but are also committed to growing as people. There is something really rewarding about being surrounded by people who are constantly curious, asking questions, solving problems, and pushing themselves to be better. Coaching at one of the top institutions in the world challenges me to continue growing as a coach, while also giving me the opportunity to help these incredible women pursue excellence both in the classroom and on the court.
"Resiliency and relentlessness are at the heart of our program. We teach our players to focus on the things they can control: energy, effort, accountability, and respect. We are building a culture rooted in mental toughness, trust, and playing as one unit. When we step on the court, we understand that we are representing more than just ourselves. We represent Caltech Athletics and one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. We are proud to represent Caltech, the Pasadena community, and a place that stands for innovation and excellence in STEM."
Quan and the Beavers open the 2026-27 season at Caltech's Braun Gymnasium against Stanton University on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
