PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Men's Tennis posted its third consecutive win, taking down Whitman College 4-3 on a hot Friday afternoon.
"I am incredibly proud of the way these guys battled through adversity and brutal heat conditions on court," said Head Coach
Adam Clark. "At points during this match, we had no momentum, but each of these guys has so much heart and just dug deep. They displayed Caltech Tennis today and proved that nobody in the country will fight harder than us. A great team win and just happy for these guys to pull off a comeback like that."
Whitman took charge of the match initially with wins in first and third doubles, but juniors
Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne (Paris / Lycée Jean de La Fontaine) and
Tejas Ram (Allen, Texas / Allen) battled to a 7-5 set win over the Artem Manov / Charles Rush duo, most recently ranked 14
th in the Division III national doubles rankings.
Riding that momentum, No. 28 Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne evened the score with a straight-sets win in first singles over No. 10 Alexander Stage, 6-4, 6-1. The Blues picked up their first singles win on Court 6 before Ram evened the score again with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on Court 4.
Andrew Zabelo (Florham Park, N.J. / Newark Academy) brought the Beavers one match point away from victory with a three-set win in #2 singles, prevailing 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. The visiting Blues equalized again, leaving the match to be decided on Court 5.
It was
Michael Gao (Chesterbrook, Pa. / Conestoga High School) who had the last word, rebounding after a second set defeat to clinch the Beaver victory with 6-2, 4-6 and 6-3 scores.
"A huge shoutout to Zabelo for regrouping after his first set and running away with the match after," Coach Clark said. "Awesome to see Mikey get his first clinch here at Caltech; kid stepped up big for the team!"
The Beavers have the weekend off before facing Linfield University on Monday, Mar. 23 at 11 a.m.
