PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Men's Tennis battled punishing heat as it swept its duel against Colorado College on Thursday afternoon.
No. 31 Caltech quickly claimed the doubles point as the team of senior Andrew Zabelo (Florham Park, N.J. / Newark Academy) and Junior Eric He (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) were the first to finish, winning their match 6-1. Juniors Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne (Paris / Lycée Jean de La Fontaine) and Tejas Ram (Allen, Texas / Allen) finished shortly after with a 6-4 victory.
First-year Michael Gao (Chesterbrook, Pa. / Conestoga High School) and senior Andrew Zabelo (Florham Park, N.J. / Newark Academy) secured the doubles sweep in a thrilling 7-5 nailbiter.
No. 28 Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne and Zabello continued their dominance in singles, dropping just four games between them in their respective singles victories to complete an efficient day at the office for the upperclassmen. Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne won 6-2, 6-0, while Zabello turned in a clinical 6-1, 6-1 performance. The two are a combined 9-3 in singles matches this season.
First-year David Jin (San Jose, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty High School) continued his strong year with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the third match to finish of the day. Jin has lost just once in his first season with the Beavers.
He followed up his doubles performance with a dominant first set in singles, winning 6-1 on court four. He took the second set, 6-3, to finish his day with two victories.
Ram's singles match on court three was the only one to go more than two sets, although the third set was replaced with a 10-point tiebreaker with the duel having already been decided. Ram won a topsy-turvy match 6-4, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).
Gao ultimately secured the seven-point sweep for Caltech. His singles match lasted over two and a half hours, finishing well over half an hour after all other courts had completed play. Gao outlasted his opponent for the 7-6, 6-4 victory.
