Caltech Men's Tennis Clinches Postseason Berth in Senior Day Victory

PASADENA, Calif. – The Beavers played host to Occidental College in their final match of the 2026 SCIAC campaign, taking down the visiting Tigers in a dominant 6-1 triumph on Senior Day.

"Proud of the resilience this group showed today after a tough last week," said Head Coach Adam Clark. "Playing in a win-or-go-home match is not easy but these guys handled the occasion well and posted some dominant scores. Happy we earned a chance to play another match and make SCIAC Championships."

Caltech opened the day with a pair of quick doubles set wins, with the #2 pairing of juniors Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne (Paris / Lycée Jean de La Fontaine) and Tejas Ram (Allen, Texas / Allen) posting a flawless 6-0 score. Then in #1 Doubles, Senior Andrew Zabelo (Florham Park, N.J. / Newark Academy) and junior Eric He (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) defended their No. 7 ITA West Region Doubles ranking with a 6-2 win to secure the dual point.

Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne carried the momentum through his #2 Singles match, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Ram followed closely with matching 6-4 scores on Court 4, and finally it was first-year Michael Gao (Chesterbrook, Pa. / Conestoga High School) who clinched the dual victory for Caltech with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #5.

Zabelo finished off nationally-ranked Tate Ransom on Court 1 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 for the Beavers' fifth dual point.

"A big shoutout to our Senior, on Senior Day, Andrew Zabelo, on a couple decisive wins in doubles and singles today," said Coach Clark. "He is playing the best tennis of his Caltech career right now and he deserves it after all the work he has put in."

With the day already decided, first-year Jan Safrata rallied after split sets to win his 10-point super-tiebreak and the match 6-2, 6-7(4), [10-8].

The Beavers advance to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament semifinals and will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m.
