Getting to know...
- Where would you live if you could live anywhere in the world (fictional, real, or imaginary)?Bay Area – I miss home!
- If you could be one age forever what would it be? 14, because you’re old enough to understand, but young enough to still be a kid.
- If you could have been a child prodigy what would you have wanted to be skilled at? Piano, my parents’ ears would be grateful (I played for 10+ years).
- If you were reincarnated as an animal what would it be? An orca since they’re majestic and free.
- What would you name your autobiography? Impromptu Thoughts because that’s all my autobiography would be filled with if I did write one.
- What do you miss most about being a kid? Playing outside in the grass and getting kids’ menus from restaurants.
- What was your favorite activity in gym class? Yoga/Pilates every Wednesday in dance class. We’d have the lights off and be in savasana (lying down on the ground) for the last few minutes.
- Would you rather be really really big or really really small? Really small, it’s the little things in life that make me smile, and you could see all the details in life up close.
- What did you want to be when you were young? And now? An astronomer when I was younger since I liked looking at the stars. A professor now since you can help people through both research and teaching.
- What song would you sing at karaoke night? Don’t Stop Believing.
- Where would you not mind waiting? At the beach with a good book. If there’s no good book, then a bookstore!
- What would you refuse to do for one million dollars? Give up traveling because “a ship in port is safe, but that is not what ships are built for”
- How do you like to relax? Spending time with family, hiking with friends.
- If you could dis-invent one thing, what would it be? All-nighters.
- What always makes you a more confident person? Reminding myself that a smile is a curve that sets everything straight.
- What language would you like to master? Italian, because while the majority of languages stem from most common dialect, the standard for Italian comes from Dante’s works – how beautiful!
- What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod? Aftermath by Lifehouse.
- If you could paint a picture of any scenery you’ve seen before, what would you paint? The view from Mirador San Nicholas in Granada, Spain.
- If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be? Simply continuing my work on OCO-2, a satellite that measures carbon dioxide levels, at JPL. It’s so rewarding, and the people I work with are amazing.
- If you had to change your first name, what would you change it to? I’d change it to Jenny since that was what I went by when I was younger (I moved a lot, didn’t correct my teachers during role call, and Yanbing was pronounceable). It’s what I still use at Starbucks. Only temporarily though, because I like my name!
- What story does your family always tell about you? There’s a photo of me and my younger cousin fighting over a building block when we were 3 and 2. My family likes to joke that the photo represents our personalities perfectly – I’m focused and close to tears at my tower being knocked over and she’s calm and smiling back at me. I’ve always admired how easy-going she is, and try to be more like her.
- Where’s Waldo? On his way back from a coffee run with a special something for you (:
