Strong Second Period Lifts Cal Lutheran

PASADENA, Calif. -- Cal Lutheran scored nine second period goals to aid in their 22-7 win over Caltech in a SCIAC men's water polo match-up at the Braun Pool Wednesday afternoon.

The Kingsmen, who entered the game ranked as the No. 3 team in the most recent NCAA Division III coaches poll, improved to 10-6 overall while the Beavers fall to 1-13.

The opening eight minutes saw the visitors score the first three goals before Daniel Sexton put the Beavers on the board with 1:08 left in the frame. Cal Lutheran came out firing in a high scoring second period. All three of the Beaver goals in the second frame came from Jack Blackwood while the Kingsmen had five different players find the back of the net en route to a 12-4 halftime lead.

Sexton's second goal of the day started the third period and got Caltech within 12-5 but the Beavers couldn't draw any closer the rest of the way. Cal Lutheran sealed the game by scoring seven answered goals after that as they held a 19-5 lead with 5:15 remaining.

Blackwood scored four of the Beavers goals while Sexton notched two. Tommy Kwong rounded out the Caltech scorers with a goal in the fourth stanza.

Kyle Norheim, Dejan Novakovic and Cameron Shannon each posted a hat trick in lead the Kingsmen to the win.
