Beavers Offense Explodes in Victory

PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech water polo team made some history in posting an 18-14 victory over Chaffey on Saturday afternoon at the Braun Pool.

The 18 goals represented the most goals scored by a Caltech team since the 2004 season. The win was Caltech's second on the season which was the first time a Beavers squad has done that in seven seasons.

"This was a total team effort for 32 minutes. We played hard and with a purpose to start the game and that momentum carried us throughout most of the afternoon," fourth year head coach Josh Moser said.

The Beavers seven goal first period was the most goals in a single period since Moser took over the program in 2008. Leading the way in the first eight minutes was Daniel Sexton. The senior posted a hat trick in the opening frame in helping the Beavers take a 7-4 edge.

Chaffey fought back and got within a goal at 8-7 with 4:52 left in the second period. After a Beavers time out, the offense got reignited as Caltech scored two of the final three goals in the stanza to take a 10-8 edge at the halftime buzzer.

In a tightly played third period the Beavers posted a 4-2 scoring edge. Caltech went ahead by three goals twice at 11-8 and 12-9 before putting a little bit more of a strangle hold on the contest by holding a 14-10 lead heading into the final period.

After Chaffey scored the first goal in the final period to get within 14-11, the Beavers scored four of the next five goals to seal the win.

Sexton scored a Caltech individual season high seven goals to pace the Beavers attack. Brian Penserini posted a hat trick on his birthday to aid in the Caltech offensive outburst. Adam Khan and Jerome Skelly also notched hat tricks in the win.

Ben Grabowski made 12 blocks in goal for the Beavers.
