PASADENA, CA – The Caltech men's water polo team broke
open a tight contest with a strong final period en route to their
15-12 win over Citrus College on Wednesday evening.
Through the evening's first three periods neither team held a
lead larger than two goals until the game's final eight
minutes.
Blackwood and Blackwood Talk About the Win
The first period featured three lead changes and three ties
before Caltech took a 4-3 lead just before the final buzzer when Tim
MacDonald found the back of the net with 15 ticks on the
clock.
The team's traded two goals apiece as the squads finished the
first 16 minutes of action with Caltech leading 6-5.
Citrus took their largest lead of the evening by scoring four of
the third period's first six goals. The visitors held a 9-7 edge
after a Colin Gordon net finder with 4:14 left in the stanza.
Caltech responded with a 3-1 scoring spurt to close the quarter. Jack
Blackwood found the back of the cage with 19 seconds left in
the quarter to tie the game at 10-10 heading into the final
frame.
Third Period Goals -- Patric Eck Break Away, Jack Blackwood Goes "Blind" for Goal
Caltech owned the final eight minutes of action. The Beavers
outscored the Owls 5-2 to claim the victory. Blackwood scored four
goals to pace the home team's efforts during the final frame.
Blackwood scored a game high seven goals in pacing the Beavers
to the victory. His brother, Jim
Blackwood, chipped in a hat trick to aid in the Beavers
cause.
Ben Grabowksi made 10 saves in goal as the Beavers took the
triumph.
