WALLA WALLA, Wash. (Nov. 21, 2015) – Efficient offense was not enough for the Caltech men's basketball team at Whitman College on Saturday as the Beavers were outgunned by the Whitties' breakneck tempo and deep roster in a 111-73 defeat.

Whitman improves to 2-0 on the season while Caltech dips below .500 at 1-2 after its Northwest road trip.

Sophomore David Kawashima (Studio City, Calif. / North Hollywood) and juniors Ricky Galliani (Menlo Park, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) and Lawrence Lee (Hong Kong / Hong Kong International School) hit double figures in scoring for the Beavers, who committed a whopping 30 turnovers and were essentially without senior Kc Emezie (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge), who was able to play just seven minutes.  Whitman generated an incredible 30 shots more than Caltech and crashed the boards for a +14 advantage on the glass to cruise to victory.

Junior David LeBaron (San Diego, Calif. / Francis Parker) put Caltech on top with the first bucket of the game one minute in, but the Beavers went ice cold for the remainder of the half, including a five-minute scoreless drought.  The hosts built up a tremendous 31-point lead by halftime at 62-31.

The second half could not have stood in starker contrast to the first as Caltech could not miss, shooting a ridiculous 70 percent from the field and 63 percent on three-pointers.  Still, Whitman forced 17 turnovers that led to 13 extra shots to simply outpace the Beavers' efficiency and seal the win.

Lee led Caltech with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting (2-of-3 beyond the arc) in just 20 minutes of action while Galliani and Kawashima chipped in 13 apiece – Kawashima's first career double-figure game.  Freshmen Brent Cahill (Laguna Beach, Calif. / St. Margaret's) and Andrew Wang (Germantown, Md. / Poolesville) dropped eight and five points, respectively, while senior Robert Anderson (Orono, Minn. / Orono) and junior Matthew Edwards (Canyon Country, Calif. / Canyon) each knocked down their only three-point attempts of the game – their first points of the season – in a rare extended run of minutes.  Freshman Steven Brotz (Santa Clarita, Calif. / Canyon) also scored the first points of his career, converting both free throw attempts.

Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers host their home opener versus Linfield College (2-0) on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
