LA VERNE, Calif. (Jan. 4, 2020) – Three members of the Caltech women's basketball team scored at least 15 points in a game for the first time this season as the Beavers opened up 2020 on the road at the University of La Verne.
Seniors Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) and Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon), along with freshman Sahana Saikumar (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia) all scored at least 15 points with Peng leading the way with 16. Saikumar came up big on the glass with 16 rebounds, 14 of which came on the defensive end and Lauinger also double-doubled with 11 total rebounds. Peng, meanwhile, did most of her damage from deep thanks to four three-pointers. The senior went on to post a well-rounded line of five rebounds and five assists to go with her team-leading point total.
The Beavers' accurate free-throw shooting was once again a bright spot. Caltech made 10-of-11 from the foul line, with Lauinger shooting a perfect 7-of-7 herself. The Beavers also managed to our-rebound the host Leopards, 51-50, despite playing less than half the number of players. However, while La Verne's strength in numbers affected Caltech early, the Beavers managed to match the Leopards, 38-38, over the game's final two quarters. Peng particularly came on strong in the second half, scoring all 16 of her points over the final 20 minutes.
Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will be back on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when they travel to Whittier College.
