Beavers Tripped Up by Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2022) - In an an aggressively played, wide open game between the Beavers and their hosts, the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, it was the home team who used an own goal committed by Caltech in the first minute of the contest to take a quick lead. The goal was scored off of a well-played cross that found the back of the net when trying to be cleared.  In the 29th minute,  the Beavers defense faced another run down the right wing by CMS that was then crossed by the Athenas, as they got out to a 2-0 lead that they would maintain into halftime, as well as the final whistle.

Quick Shots

  • Final Score: Caltech-0,  CMS- 2ar
  • Location: Pritzlaff Field, Claremont Mckenna College campus, Claremont, Calif.
  • Records: Caltech: (3-4-2, 1-4-0 SCIAC) and CMS: (3-4-2, 1-4-0 SCIAC)

Critical Moment

  • In the first 8 minutes of the second half, the ball was played to Caltech sophomore forward Jennifer Solgaard (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) who made a run down the left wing deep in the Athena's half of the field.  Her well placed cross went over the top of the goalkeeper, who got a slight touch on it.  The ball then carromed off of the far right goal post, saving what would have been goal, getting the Beavers back within one goal at 1-2.  But it didn't go in as the Beavers remained scoreless, trailing by the score of 0-2.

Key Beavers

  • Megan Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall).  Starting for the Beavers in goal, the junior, and Caltech's defense, were under assault from the opening whistle.  Conceeding an own goal in the first minute, Roberston helped to compose the defense, and came up big on several point blank shots in the first 24 minutes.  A sliding stop and then subsequesnt dangerous play by a CMS player forced Robertson to leave the contest.  While managing the cage for Caltech, Roberston made no less than three oustanding saves that kept the game close.
  • Sophia Steven (Broomfield, Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter). Coming on for Robertson in the 24th minute in goal, the first year, Steven, made three quality saves after also conceeding a goal on the first shot she faced on the day.  Her steady play helped the Beavers keep the Athenas within reach.
  • Jennifer Solgaard (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto).  The sophomore forward created the best chance of the afternoon, that had it not bounced out and away from goal but in, the Beavers would have been within a goal with over 35 minutes remaining.  Her three goals on the year leadsthe Beavers offensive efforts, and her work rate and attempts on goal and to get teammates involved is impressive.
  • Cameron Scantlin (San Diego, Calif. / Valhalla).  Scantlin, a junior defensive player, steadied the backline, clearing multiple chances out of the penalty area.  While both goals for CMS came off of crosses that were played into the 6 yard box, their constant attack challenged Scantlin and her teammates.  To her and her teammates credit, they held up, keeping the game within reach, and scoreless for the last hour of action.
