LOS ANGELES (Dec. 31, 2022) – Caltech Women's Basketball wrapped up the 2022 portion of the season, facing their closest SCIAC rival in Occidental College in an afternoon matchup on New Year's Eve at Rush Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) scored the first points of the contest, her layup followed by another one by junior
Milan Robinson (Anaheim, Calif. / Fairmont Prep) to give the Beavers an early 4-0 lead. The host Tigers responded with a pair of layups to tie the game before sophomore
Kodie Vondra (Livingston, Mont. / Park) drained a jump shot to put Caltech back on top. After Oxy pulled ahead again, junior
Claire Perhach (Carlsbad, Calif. / Sage Creek) kept Caltech close with a two-pointer off a dish from Edwards.
Both teams struggled to find the hoop for the next several minutes, stretching into the second quarter before Perhach nailed another jumper, and then a steal by Edwards led to her game-tying three-pointer to make it 14-14, followed by a pair of layups to put the Beavers ahead again. Oxy rallied and ultimately led at halftime, but Caltech's resilience held the Tigers to just a 12-11 margin in the period.
The Tigers heated up in the second half, but the Beavers battled all the way back from a 13-point deficit to make it just a two-possession game with under three minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
Edwards led both teams with 16 points and five steals, also contributing a pair of assists on offense. Vondra and Robinson each tallied 11 points while no Occidental player scored more than nine.
The Beavers will open up 2023 at home on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. against University of Redlands. Watch the game live on
