PASADENA, Calif. (Jan. 4, 2023) – The Caltech women's basketball team hosted the University of Redlands Wednesday night in both teams' first contest since New Year's Day.
While the visiting Bulldogs started off strongly and maintained a lead for most of the first half, the Beavers held pace and never let their deficit extend into double digits, rallying back at the end of the second frame to tie the game just after halftime. While Redlands ultimately prevailed, it was a close game from start to finish with some stellar performances by the outnumbered Caltech squad.
Junior
Milan Robinson (Anaheim, Calif. / Fairmont Prep) put the Beavers on the scoreboard with a layup on her first attempt to quickly tie the score at 2-2. Senior
Faith Pinney (Spokane, Wash. / Gonzaga Preparatory School) and sophomore
Kathryn Edwards (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) also scored in the opening period to keep the Beavers within four.
Caltech trailed by as many as eight points in the second quarter until Pinney sparked a rally in the last five minutes, starting with a big three-pointer at 4:23 and ending with another just seconds before halftime. After the break, junior
Claire Perhach (Carlsbad, Calif. / Sage Creek) dropped in a layup on the Beavers' first possession of the second half, tying the game at 28 points each
Sophomore
Kodie Vondra (Livingston, Mont. / Park) shined in the third quarter, tallying six points, two steals and no turnovers. The Beavers would head into the fourth quarter with a one-point lead, having outscored the Bulldogs 33-28 in the middle quarters.
Redlands threatened to run away with the game early in the final frame, but a clutch three by sophomore
Maria Vazhaeparambil (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School) ignited the Braun Gymnasium crowd and pulled Caltech back within a point at 47-46.
Despite the final score, it was a night to remember for
Faith Pinney as she led the Beavers in scoring with a career-high 18 points, further tallying seven total rebounds with five on offense, an assist, a block, and a steal. Vondra ended up with 10 points and a team-high three steals, while Edwards posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Head Coach
Annie Tarakchian and the Beavers will face California Lutheran University on the road this Saturday at 5 p.m.
