CLAREMONT, Calif (Jan. 28, 2022) — Senior forward
Ben Juarez knocked down a career-high three of Caltech's eight triples on Saturday as the Beavers faced the No. 19 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags in a conference duel.
The battle against the Beavers' nationally ranked foe started off evenly, with the two teams trading buckets in the first few minutes of play. A 10-10 tie was reached about six and half minutes into the half, but Caltech soon pulled ahead. A three from freshman
Noah Hicks and another by Juarez put the Beavers up six about halfway through the half. The Stags responded with a two-point bucket, but another deep ball by Hicks put Caltech up 19-12 with 10:14 to go in the half.
CMS would quickly respond, going on a 7-0 run to tie it at 19 before getting ahead 34-29 on the Beavers at the break. Caltech hung around for the first part of the second half but were unable to strike a comeback as the final buzzer sounded.
The Beavers were all over the offensive glass in the matchup, grabbing a total of 14 offensive boards to the Stags' five. The team's eight made deep shots were their second-most all season and the most when facing a SCIAC opponent.
The Beavers also recorded 14 assists and 15 turnovers in the game, good for their third and fourth-best marks of the season in conference play.
Senior
Pavlos Stavrinides led the way in points for the squad with 17, going 7-for-11 on the night. He added nine boards, three dimes and one steal.
Fellow senior
Chase Pagon notched his twelfth double-double of the year, grabbing a career-high nine offensive rebounds and a game-high 12 total to go with 11 points, a steal, and six assists – the second-most dimes in a game in his career.
Juarez totaled nine points from his three deep shots (3-for-5 from distance), which makes it his most ever in a conference matchup. Hicks' three made shots beyond the arc was one shy of his career-high.
The Beavers will look to pick up a win in their next matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at home, where they will face the Bulldogs of Redlands University.
