Chauhan Impresses in Return as Women's Basketball Faces CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2023) — The Caltech Beavers traveled to Roberts Pavilion on Saturday afternoon for a rematch against the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. In their first matchup earlier this month, the Beavers battled in an OT thriller against CMS at home in Braun Gymnasium.

Saturday's game started off where the last one ended, with both teams playing close basketball and no team pulling ahead by more than three halfway through the first quarter. An "and-one" layup and free throw by junior Milan Robinson made the score 13-16 with 3:15 to go in the period, but it was here that the Athenas went on a rapid-fire 8-0 run to end the quarter.

The Beavers brought that 11-point lead down to six just a few minutes into the second quarter, but the Athenas would again pull ahead as the period progressed. Caltech battled throughout the entirety of the second half but were unable to catch up to CMS, who improved to 9-2 in-conference with the win.

Despite the loss, Caltech saw sophomore Saumya Chauhan return to action after a multi-game absence. Chauhan finished with eight points -- third-most for the Beavers -- in her 18 minutes of play. The guard went 3-for-5 (2-for-3 from deep) and added a rebound, an assist, and a steal.

Sophomore Kodie Vondra led Caltech in scoring with 17, going 7-for-13 on the day and splashing in two of her four deep shots. She added five boards, two steals and one assist in the contest.

Fellow sophomore Kathryn Edwards added 14 in the matchup in addition to two dimes, one block, and a team-high eight boards.

Both Vondra and Edwards led the Beavers in steals with three apiece.

The team tied their third-highest mark in made field goals in a conference game this season with 22. Similarly, their .379 FG percentage was the squad's third-best against conference opponents this season.

Head Coach Annie Tarakchian and the Beavers' next game will be on the road as they face the Redlands Bulldogs on Wednesday, Feb. 1. at 7 p.m.
