Schork Nets Three as Men’s Water Polo Faces No. 3 Sagehens

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech men's water polo team hosted the No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at Braun Pool on Monday in a battle of two SCIAC squads.

The squad created a number of strong opportunities throughout the match but faced a tough task in toppling the Pomona-Pitzer defense.

The Caltech offense began to flow in the third period, as sophomore center Bram Schork found the back of the net after firing off an explosive shot. The captain was fed the ball inside from first-year attacker Heramba Patil.

The team found rhythm on the defensive end as well; in net, sophomore goalkeeper Sujit Iyer held the visitors to just four goals for the quarter.

Schork kicked off the scoring in the fourth period as first-year attacker Joshua Braun found the center who quickly put it in the back of the cage with 6:36 on the clock.

The team earned two straight scores later in the period as Schork netted his third goals before first-year utility Eric Verheyden scored less than a minute off the assist from Braun.

Caltech excelled in drawing exclusiuons; Schork led the way with four while first-year attacker Justin Hong drew two. Verheyden, first-year attacker Alexi Stapf and first-year utility Axel Haydt each logged one.

The Beavers recorded ten total drawn exclusions to the Sagehens' five. Hong won the third period sprint.

Despite the result, head coach Jon Bonafede came away with positive notes from the contest.

"Our team was not discouraged from this loss," said Bonafede. "We improved and walked away from this game in good spirits."

Next up for the team is a Oct. 11 home matchup against the Panthers of Chapman University with action kicking off at 7 p.m. Cheer on the Beavers in-person or follow along online on gocaltech.com/coverage.
