Choi-Schattle Scores as Women's Soccer Faces Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. — The Caltech women's soccer team competed in its penultimate road game of the season on Wednesday as the squad faced off against Chapman University in a late afternoon battle.

It was the Panthers who struck first in the contest though the Beavers soon responded with an impressive offensive possession of their own in the 11th minute. Senior defender Cameron Scantlin began the action after intercepting a loose ball and passing it to first-year midfielder Ellie Yamada, who sent the ball wide to junior midfielder Juni Polansky. The Baltimore native dribbled the ball to near midfield before sending a perfectly placed pass ahead to the surging junior forward Jennifer Solgaard, who took it all the way into the box before firing it towards the net. A Panther defender stepped in for the block to prevent the goal.

Caltech posted another promising shot attempt after drawing a foul near the corner in the 19th minute. Sophomore defender Meher Banik took the shot, though the ball curved just a bit early as it hit the side of the netting.

The Beavers entered the second half undeterred as they created even more opportunities on offense in the latter 45 minutes.

A ball stolen by Solgaard helped create a massive chance for the squad deep into the second half. After taking the ball away from a Panther defender, the ball made its way to first-year midfielder/forward Misha Yap, who pushed it ahead to the sprinting Solgaard. The striker rocketed a shot towards the net, though missed right of the goal.

Solgaard would fire another shot towards the net a few minutes later after juking the Chapman defense, though she missed left.

The Beavers continued to push the Panther defense as the period continued, and eventually found the back of the net. With a few minutes remaining in the game, Banik took advantage of a sleeping defense as she sent the ball way forward after a Panther foul in the backfield. Solgaard brought down the long pass and kicked it to first-year Louise Marie Choi-Schattle, who quickly got around the Chapman defense before she fired an incredibly strong shot from way deep outside the box. The goalkeeper could not get to the ball as it soared into the back part of the netting.

It was the rookie's second goal of the season and career; Solgaard moves to three assists this fall. Sophomore Sophia Steven recorded 12 saves in goal.

Head coach Emmy Meyring and the squad will prepare for their final road matchup of the season this Saturday, Oct. 14 as they go up against the Poets of Whittier College at 7 p.m. Follow the action online at gocaltech.com/coverage.
