Men’s Soccer Battles Chapman on the Road

ORANGE, Calif. — The Caltech men's soccer team competed in its penultimate road game of the season on Wednesday as they took on the defending champion Chapman University Panthers in a high-energy inter-conference clash.

The Beavers came into the day hungry for more after tying the Panthers 2-2 in a thrilling matchup one week ago. Wednesday's rematch proved to be another exciting contest, albeit a more tactical battle.

It was the home team that logged the first shot attempt of the afternoon, though Caltech responded with a promising offensive possession in the 19th minute. With the Beavers on the offensive, sophomore forward Ishaan Mantripragada sent a cross to sophomore midfielder Etienne Casanova on the left wing; Casanova fired off a shot though it missed right of the goal.

Caltech created one of its strongest chances of the day within the first minute of the second half after the Beavers took over possession at midfield and quickly pushed the ball to the sprinting Mantripragada. The striker dribbled the ball up into the box though the Chapman goalkeeper rushed out for the last second-save to keep the game scoreless.

The Beavers nearly earned the game's first goal about 15 minutes later as senior midfielder Rohan Iyer read a well-placed cross; after positioning himself on the left wing, the veteran hit an incredible side volley with his right foot into the back of the goal. The team began to celebrate before it was called back due to a narrow offsides violation.

Caltech nearly connected on a free kick opportunity in the 77th minute, but the goalkeeper soared in for the save.

The team posted six shots in the final 45 minutes of play; senior goalkeeper Derek Ing logged four saves. Caltech fouled two times to the opponents' 13.

Next up for head coach Duncan Gillis and the program is the Beavers' final road game of the 2023 regular season as the squad takes on Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. The team will then return home for its final regular season game as they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m.
