LA VERNE, Calif. – Caltech Men's Water Polo continued its SCIAC campaign on a hot and sunny Wednesday afternoon at the University of La Verne.
Bram Schork led the charge for the Beavers with a block of La Verne's first shot and then scoring the first goal of the game a couple minutes later. La Verne retaliated with a penalty goal and a natural goal, but Schork tied the game back up with 3:16 to go in the quarter; Joshua Braun provided the assist.
The Leopards claimed the next two goals, but Schork drew a penalty foul on an early break in the second quarter, and then buried his shot from the five-meter mark to bring Caltech back within one goal.
Eric Verheyden picked up the Beavers' fourth goal with assistance from Alexi Stapf late in the third quarter after a surge by the home team, and Schork scored again a short while later on Kaleb Hudson Dy's assist. Benefiting from a drawn exclusion after that, Braun scored on the 6-on-5 opportunity, with Dy providing another assist. Braun netted one more in the fourth quarter, and Schork notched his fifth and the Beavers' eighth on a late powerplay after a pass from Rex Liu.
Goalkeeper Sujit Iyer made eight impressive saves and Axel Haydt led the team in steals.
"We opened strong and competed throughout the game," Head Coach Jon Bonafede said. "It's evident that we are improving and gaining valuable experience. I am pleased with our effort and attitude today, and we will keep getting better."
The Beavers will have a couple of days off before heading east again to face the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags on Saturday at 11 a.m.
