PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's soccer team hosted the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas on Saturday in a late-morning inter-conference clash. The Beavers battled valiantly throughout the 90 minutes, overcoming extremely hot temperatures while facing a formidable opponent.
The contest began with the Athenas firing off the first shot of the day in the fifth minute, though sophomore goalkeeper
Sophia Steven soared in for the save to keep the game scoreless.
Caltech came up with yet another stop a few minutes later after a CMS cross found its way to a striker just a few feet from the goal, though Steven scooped up the ball as it headed her way.
The Beavers posted their first shot of the game in the 15th minute as first-year midfielder
Louise Marie Choi-Schattle sent a shot towards the net, missing wide left.
CMS would pick up the first goal of the day in the 33rd minute, though the Beavers immediately responded with some strong play in the midfield to win possessions.
The visitors scored again a few minutes later, though Caltech was not dismayed as they immediately produced an opportunity on the offensive side of the ball. A nice pass from junior defender
Georgia Malueg set up junior forward
Jennifer Solgaard, who dribbled towards the goal before firing a shot blocked by the Athena goalkeeper.
Both squads produced a number of strong opportunities after coming back from the halftime intermission.
The Beavers created one of their best chances in the 61st minute of play. After taking the ball down the sideline and drawing the CMS defense, Solgaard found a trailing Choi-Schattle inside the box, who fired a shot at the goal but just barely missed high.
The team saw another promising opportunity in their 64th minute corner kick, as sophomore defender
Meher Banik sent the ball from the corner to the top of the box, where first-year midfielder
Ellie Yamada delivered a strong shot to the left side of the net before the CMS goalkeeper soared in for the last-moment save.
Solgaard got off another goal opportunity on the team's next possession as she came up on the left wing, though she missed just left.
Choi-Schattle sent two more shots towards the goal in the waning minutes of the contest, though the CMS defense stopped both chances.
The Beavers logged seven shots on the contest; they fouled four times to the Athenas' nine. Steven picked up four saves in the first half while first-year goalkeeper
Haleigh Gardner came up with five saves in the second.
