Woo Breaks Own School Record as Women's Swim & Dive Nabs Second at Caltech Invite

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech Women's Swim & Dive team earned second place at the Caltech Invite this past Saturday as the Beavers beat out two conference rivals in Occidental College and the University of Redlands.

The meet, which also saw participation from Cal Lutheran University, spanned two days and provided a high level of competition for all teams. Caltech put up one of its strongest meets this fall as the program produced a plethora of program top-10 times and one massive school record.

Sophomore Jana Woo kicked off the meet by breaking her own school record in the 3-meter dive across the 11-dive format. The Saratoga native scored an incredible 514.40 points to destroy her own record of 470.50 from 2022.

The star won the event in the six-dive format, earning a score of 299.55 to nab the victory.

Caltech continued to dominate as the meet switched to swimming; in the first event, the program demonstrated the strength of its youth as first-years -- Allison Xin Grace Davis, Beatrice Cai and Isabel Xu – posted the program's No. 4 time in the 400-yard medley relay (4:02.19). Individually, Xin notched the No. 8 spot on the record boards in the 100-yard backstroke after leading off the talented relay team.

Sophomore Elizabeth Won registered an excellent race in the 500-yard freestyle; the Hong Kong native tapped the wall at 5:17.60 to improve on her own program No. 3 time.

Caltech posted one of its strongest races in the 200-yard IM as they went 1-2-3 to earn a number of important points and post three new times on the program's event top-10 list.

It was Cai who earned the victory over 13 other competitors as she continued her excellent day; the standout soared to fourth all-time with the performance as she finished the race in 2:12.39. Xin followed moments later with a blazing time of 2:13.61 to grab No. 6 all-time, while first-year Karen Zhou finished third in 2:14.19 to put her name at No. 8 all-time.

Davis went on to win the 100-yard breaststroke after swimming a lightning 1:09.23 to beat out nine other student-athletes. With the result, the South Dakota native rockets up to No. 3 all-time in the 100 Breast record sheets.

Junior Catherine Deng grabbed the win in the 100-yard backstroke (59.54), nearly beating her No. 4 all-time record from 2022 (59.28).

First-year Emily Yu moved up to No. 5 in the 200-yard freestyle leaderboards after a stellar 1:59.15 performance; only six Beavers have ever broken two minutes in the history of the program.

The meet concluded with the 200-yard freestyle relays, in which the Caltech 'A' team made its way to No. 5 all-time in the history of the Institute; the program demonstrated its depth as the 'B' team secured the No. 10 all-time spot.

Cai, Xu, Yu and Xin made up the first team, finishing the race in 1:39.66 before Deng, junior Natalie Lee, senior Brea Swartwood and Zhou posted a 1:43.89 performance.

The group spent the evening resting and performing Saturday evening before returning to action at 9 a.m on Sunday morning.

Woo posted another outstanding performance in diving as she competed in the 1-meter dive. The sophomore scored 259.00 points in the 6-dive format and 442.00 in 11 dives.

The Beavers kicked off the Sunday swimming events with a massive win in the 200-yard medley relay, as Deng, Davis, Cai and Xin posted a huge 1:49.04 victory over 11 other relay groups. With the result, the group moves up to third all-time in the program's event history.

Zhou posted one of the most impressive individual times of the weekend in the 400-yard IM; the newcomer swam a brilliant 4:44.97 to win the race and put herself second all-time in the history of the program.

Davis continued her excellent weekend as she won the 200-yard breaststroke and nearly toppled the school record in the process. The first-year posted a time of 2:26.70 in the 13-athlete event, just missing out on the program record of 2:25.96.

Cai nabbed the win in the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.90) as she earned the fifth spot in the program top-ten list for the event.

Cai continued dominating as she joined Deng, Xu and Win in the 400-yard medley relay; the group put themselves fourth on the list with a time of 3:36.97. Cai's leadoff time of 54.50 lands her at No. 6 on the program's 100 Free record boards.

In the 200-yard backstroke list, Yu (2:12.92) scored the No. 7 spot and Xin (2:13.54) nabbed the No. 9 spot.

Head coach Andrew Brabson was happy with the group's performance, which saw a flurry of program top-10 times.

"The invite went quite well," said Brabson. "We ended the session with a school record and a large number of season-best performances. This meet always serves as a nice abbreviated conference meet rehearsal and I am excited to see what the team can do as we head into next year."

The program will now focus on its next meet on Saturday, Jan. 6 as they take on Cal Lutheran and Redlands on the road.
