PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2023) – After topping Pomona-Pitzer 61-53 in their duel last month, the Caltech women's basketball team traveled to Claremont, California on Wednesday for another battle against the Sagehens.
The game began where the last one ended, with the Beavers taking a quick 4-0 lead after a made layup by junior forward
Claire Perhach and another by sophomore guard-forward
Kathryn Edwards. Pomona-Pitzer immediately responded, however, to take a 5-4 lead.
The two teams traded baskets to make the score 7-7 with 5:46 to go in the opening frame, but a 12-4 run to end the quarter put the Sagehens ahead by eight heading into the break.
The home team extended their lead in the next two quarters as they shot a blazing 9-of-14 from deep in a twenty-minute span. The deficit was too much to overcome, but the unwavering Beavers played hard in the final quarter – getting outscored by only two.
Edwards – the sixth-highest scorer in the conference – led the way in points for Caltech, earning 17 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting night in addition to five rebounds and one assist. The Colorado native also notched three blocks – one more than the Pomona-Pitzer team entirely. The three rejections tied Edwards' career high, bringing her season total to 16.
Behind Edwards in scoring was sophomore guard
Kodie Vondra, who put in 11 and led the Beavers in boards with seven. Vondra also recorded a team-high five steals, one shy of her career high.
Caltech will play their final regular season game this Saturday, Feb. 18 at home versus the Occidental Tigers. Please join us for the game and the pre-game ceremony as the team honors its seniors.
