PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 26, 2023) – Caltech Women's Tennis hosted No. 20 Southwestern University on a chilly Sunday afternoon. The visiting Pirates looked to defend their undefeated season record after inclement weather forced the cancellation of their schedules matches against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Cal Lutheran on Friday and Saturday.
While the guests looked to sweep the doubles session with three quick wins, a dramatic match developed on Court 3 as experienced juniors
Emily Zhang (Sharon, MA / Sharon) and
Teresa Huang (Danville, CA / Monte Vista) held pace with their counterparts after dropping the first game. The two pairs kept splitting games between changeovers until the Beavers turned the tides with back-to-back wins and ultimately prevailing 8-6 to earn Caltech its first victory of the day.
The Beavers found more success in #2 Singles as sophomore
Yoyo Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) made quick work of her rival, flying to a pair of 6-1 set scores. Benchetrit improved her singles record to 2-0, her first win coming in #3 Singles last Monday against Brandeis University.
On Court 3, sophomore
Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) bounced back after dropping her middle set and battled to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 triumph for her first Singles point of the young season.
Senior
Nina Solovyeva and sophomore
Payal Patel both nearly bounced back in their second sets, bring their opponents all the way to tiebreaks before just falling short of forcing a deciding third set.
Head Coach
Benay Weintraub and the Beavers will return to their home courts on Thursday, Mar. 2 to host the No. 14 Mary Washington University Eagles at 3 p.m.
