PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's water polo team battled Washington & Jefferson College on Tuesday in a rainy, back-and-forth matchup. First-year center attacker
Mia Mutadich led the Beavers in scoring with three goals, while senior utility
Amanda Piyapanee led the team in points with six.
With the Beavers down 0-2 in the game's opening minutes, it was junior driver
Tyler Fox who scored first for the home squad. The Connecticut native found the back of the net with 4:52 to go in the period after getting fed the ball by junior driver
Emma Gurcan. Just over two minutes later, Piyapanee would score, with the assist coming from Mutadich. The Presidents would put one more ball into the net in the period, but first-year driver
Madelyn Gilbert tied it up at 3-3 just before the period's close.
Caltech took the lead for the first time a few minutes into the second period thanks to an impressive goal from Mutadich, followed by another from Piyapanee with 4:08 in the second quarter. The period would end with another tie as the halftime buzzer sounded, with both teams putting in five a piece.
The third quarter saw Washington & Jefferson take a two-goal lead, but this was quickly erased as the Beavers put in a goal of their own at the 3:33 mark (first-year center defender
Maya Dickson) and another at 2:55 (Gurcan).
With the score tied for the fifth time, the two teams went into the fourth quarter looking to earn the final edge. The period started off right for Caltech, as Mutadich put in two goals within just 23 seconds of another. Dickson would push the lead to three at the 5:11 mark, but the Presidents were not done, as they tied the score up with just a few minutes to go in the fourth before taking the lead. The Beavers would net one final goal with 1:12 left in the game, with the score coming from Fox off the assist from Piyapanee — her fourth.
Over the 32 minutes, the Beavers saw goals from six different players. The group notched nine steals in the contest.
Piyapanee's four assists and six goals were both one shy of her career highs.
Caltech will take a brief rest before returning to the pool on Wednesday in another home matchup. The Beavers will face off against the Panthers of Chapman University in a conference showdown. Action will begin at 11 a.m. and will be streamed live on the
SCIAC Network.
