PASADENA, Calif. – The nationally 13th-ranked Caltech men's tennis team hosted No. 9 Johns Hopkins University Friday morning under blue skies and no clouds after persistent stormy weather had been soaking the region.
The Beavers faced a high-powered Blue Jays team that made every point a challenge, every game a battle. While the guests claimed all three doubles sets, Caltech did not go down quietly, with the #2 Doubles pairing of
Kyle McCandless and
Daniel Wen taking their rivals all the way to a tiebreak, ultimately falling by an 8-7 (6) score.
Victor Li nearly claimed a set in #5 Singles, taking his opponent to a 7-point tiebreak in the first set and winning three games in the second set.
Andrew Zabelo rebounded from a 6-2 first set defeat with a 7-5 second set, claiming his #3 Singles match with an explosive 10-2 super tiebreak win, his fourth singles victory of the season and third against nationally ranked opponents.
Ishaan Kannan closed out the day in similar fashion, just falling short 7-5 in his first set before surging to a 6-3 second set win, and claiming the #2 Singles match with a 10-4 super tiebreak score. He similarly has four singles victories this season including three against ranked programs.
Head Coach
Matt Brisotti and the Beavers will head all the way to Texas next week to face Trinity University and Southwestern University.
