GEORGETOWN, Texas – No. 13 Caltech Men's Tennis faced the No. 19 Pirates of Southwestern University Wednesday. It was the Beavers' second match against nationally-ranked programs in as many days, this time emerging as the victors in a convincing 7-2 win.
All three doubles matchups were close with each side winning at least five games. Ultimately the Beavers won the session with another win by juniors
Kyle McCandless and
Daniel Wen on Court Two, with seniors
Nathan Zou and
Rishi Gundakaram winning #3 doubles, both partnerships winning their sets 8-5.
McCandless, ranked 11th in the ITA West Region for singles play, faced a tough opponent in the top singles pairing, No. 19 Bernardo Clemente. McCandless took the first set 6-1 becore Clemente found his stride and took the second set 6-4. The third set required a tiebreak to settle, but ultimately McCandless prevailed 7-6.
Wen also earned a match point for the Beavers in #4 Singles, defeating his rival 7-5, 6-2.
In the fifth singles flight, junior
Victor Li made quick work of his counterpart, winning 6-3, 6-1, capping a perfect road trip in singles and picking up his seventh win in his last eight matches.
First-year
Andrew Zabelo rebounded after a first set loss to win #3 Singles 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Gundakaram also picked up a second match point for Caltech, splitting sets with his opponent before a strong finish with scores of 6-3, 1-6 and 6-2 on Court Six.
