PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Men's Tennis continued their winning ways Tuesday afternoon against Swarthmore College, narrowly defeating the 28th ranked team in the country by a 5-4 match score.
Highlighting the day was junior
Daniel Wen, who paired with classmate
Kyle McCandless in #1 Doubles to win the first match of the day for the Beavers in a quick 8-3 set. Wen then blazed by a tough #4 Singles opponent with a 6-3, 6-0 score..
While the visitors claimed a match point in #3 Doubles, the Beavers broke the tie on court two as
Ishaan Kannan and
Andrew Zabelo held off the opposition with an 8-5 score.
Wen's singles victory came after Swarthmore tied the match for a second time after a #2 Singles win and again after claiming a point from #1 Singles. But while the Beavers were down, they were certainly not out as
Rishi Gundakaram rebounded from his #3 Doubles defeat and 2-6 loss in his first set in #6 Singles, coming back from a 3-0 deficit to win his second set 6-3 and ultimately claiming his match point with a 6-4 tally in the deciding set.
With Caltech ahead 4-3 as the sun set and the chilly breeze grew colder, all eyes were on the third and fifth singles pairings, all four players having earned a set victory. Zabelo rallied from a 5-2 deficit on court three to win the next five games and a 7-5 win before taking his counterpart all the way to a tiebreak in the second set. In #5 Singles,
Victor Li claimed his first set and conceded the second, both by 6-1 scores. After falling behind early in the third set, he racked up a 5-2 lead before his Swarthmore opponent was forced to retire due to injury, sealing the match's fate.
Head Coach
Matt Brisotti and the Beavers will next face the Sewanee Tigers, scheduled for a 10 a.m. start this Saturday.
