PASADENA, Calif. – Down 4-1 in her first set, junior
Athena Kolli fought back to earn a 7-5 win, repeating the score in her second set to seal the fifth match point for Caltech Women's Tennis Wednesday against Vassar College.
"Her mental toughness was off the charts," Head Coach
Benay Weintraub said of the incredible comeback.
The Beavers opened up the day by claiming victory in two of their three doubles matchups. The #2 Doubles partnership of sophomore
Yoyo Benchetrit and senior
Nina Solovyeva finished off their counterparts first, picking up an 8-5 win. The Brewers would tie the match score on court one, but the third pairing of Kolli and sophomore
Payal Patel put Caltech back on top with an 8-3 set score in their first time battling together in doubles this season.
Benchetrit, Solovyeva and Kolli all won their singles duels afterward, Benchetrit cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win in #2 Singles for the Beavers' third match point of the day. Solovyeva struggled at first, conceding her first set 6-4 before turning the match completely around and winning her next two sets by 6-3 and 6-1 tallies.
"As our lone senior, that win was an inspiration," Weintraub said. "When we spoke, she was able to reiterate any adjustments and execute to perfection." Weintraub described the team victory as a "gritty win," and expressed expressed pride in how the team competed and each individual showcased their ability to critically think on the court.
