Emily Zhang Shocks Regional No. 3 in Women's Tennis Singles

PASADENA, Calif. – Junior Emily Zhang picked up a massive singles victory Tuesday afternoon as national No. 16 Caltech Women's Tennis hosted No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a SCIAC dual match.

Zhang, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region's 17th-ranked singles player in the most recent polls, squared off against regional No. 3 Katherine Wurster of the Athenas in the top singles pairing of the day. Despite the polling gap, Zhang controlled her match from the start, holding on for a 7-5 win in the first set before cruising to a 6-2 triumph in Set 2.

The visiting Athenas brought a star-studded lineup to the Caltech Tennis Courts, including the No. 1 and No. 6 doubles partnerships in the ITA West Region. As for their No. 6 duo of Wurster and Sena Selby on Court 2, the Beavers' pairing of sophomore Yoyo Benchetrit and senior Nina Solovyeva managed to win three games in their matchup, and in third doubles, junior Athena Kolli and sophomore Payal Patel picked up four games before CMS prevailed.

Sophomore Anika Arora held pace with regional No. 5 Audrey Yoon in third singles, winning three games in the opening set and four in the second. And finally, after a 6-2 opening set defeat, first-year Anna Szczuka battled all the way to a tiebreak in her second set on Court 6 before just falling short 7-6 (4).

Head Coach Benay Weintraub and the Beavers will wrap up the home portion of the 2023 regular season Saturday morning at 10 a.m. as part of the day's Orange Out Day festivities. Follow the team on Instagram and Twitter.
