Caltech Men's Tennis Battles with Gustavus Adolphus

PASADENA, Calif. — The No. 13 Caltech men's tennis team hosted the No. 10 Gustavus Adolphus team on Thursday in a battle of nationally ranked programs. The Beavers came into the match with an 8-3 record, going 2-0 in conference play before facing the Golden Gusties in the nonconference matchup.

The match saw several Beavers log impressive performances across both singles and doubles action. In third singles, first-year Andrew Zabelo seized an impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory to earn his seventh singles win of his college career. In doubles, the newcomer linked with junior Ishaan Kannan on Court 1, where the duo traded sets in a gritty match versus Gustavus Adolphus' best. Ultimately, the two Beavers fell to Gustavus Adolphus' duo in a close 8-7 (7-4) match.

Court 4 saw an impressive performance from junior Daniel Wen, who picked up his eighth win of the season in singles play to lead the team. After falling 1-6 in the first set, Wen found his groove, cruising to a 6-2 second set and 6-2 third to earn the victory.

On Court 1, junior Kyle McCandless gained a strong 4-3 advantage in the first set; he would then go up 40-0 in the eighth game before his opponent retired due to injury, giving McCandless the win.

The Beavers will take a quick rest before returning to conference play, as they travel to Orange for an important match versus Chapman University this Saturday, Apr. 8 at 10 a.m.
