Box Score ORANGE, Calif. — The No. 13 men's tennis team defeated the Chapman University Panthers on Saturday to improve to 3-0 versus SCIAC opponents and 9-4 overall on the season. With the result, only Caltech and the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags remain undefeated in conference play.
The Beavers traveled to the campus of Chapman for the matchup in what served as an important game in the conference standings. The Panthers entered the clash with a 2-1 record in SCIAC action.
The day began with doubles play, where the Beavers got off to a hot start with a quick victory on Court 3. The senior doubles pairing of
Nathan Zou and
Rishi Gundakaram sailed to an 8-1 victory, giving Caltech the 1-0 lead.
Caltech would gain another point in the overall score thanks to the strong play on Court 2, where juniors
Kyle McCandless and
Daniel Wen earned an impressive 8-5 win over their opposing pair.
The Panthers would not stay shut out for long, however, as the home team took the win on Court 1, making the score 2-1 heading into singles.
After a quick regroup, the Beavers would soon show their dominance as they took on singles play, grabbing two-set victories on Courts 2, 3, 4 and 5.
First to finish was Wen on Court 4, who made quick work of his opponent with the 6-2, 6-1 victory. One court over, first-year
Andrew Zabelo earned the win in third singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win.
With four points on the board, the Beavers needed just one more win to clinch the match. It was
Victor Li that secured the victory for the team, as the junior notched the 6-2, 6-1 win. Also winning was junior
Ishaan Kannan in second singles, who fought his way to a strong 7-5, 6-4 victory.
Caltech has now won four of their last five matches; the Beavers extend their win streak versus Chapman to four.
Head coach
Matt Brisotti was pleased with how his team performed throughout the matchup.
"In doubles we played super hard and with good energy," said Brisotti. "Singles was also great, as we left it all out there against a tough SCIAC team."
Next up for the Beavers is the team from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a clash between the final two teams still undefeated in conference play. Caltech will face off against the Stags this Friday, Apr. 14 at 3 p.m. in a home matchup. Watch Courts 1 through 4 live on
