Women's Water Polo Hosts No. 1 Sagehens

PASADENA, Calif. — The No. 10 Caltech women's water polo team hosted the No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Saturday in a morning matchup between conference opponents. The visitors entered the pool on a seven-game win streak with a perfect 8-0 SCIAC record.

The Sagehens scored the first two goals of the contest within the first two minutes of the game, but the Beavers responded with a goal from junior driver Emma Gurcan.

First-year center attacker Mia Mutadich notched the Beavers' second goal of the contest later in the period, with the assist coming from first-year driver Madelyn Gilbert. Mutadich now sits at 43 goals scored in just her first collegiate season.

The second quarter saw Gurcan again find the back of the net, with her second goal coming on a five-meter penalty shot.

Senior utility Amanda Piyapanee won all four sprints in the contest, bringing her total sprints won to 41 this season.

The team notched eight steals in the matchup, good for their second-most versus a conference opponent thus far this season. Eight different Beavers each recorded one steal over the game's 32 minutes.

The visitors registered seven exclusions in the contest.

Next up for Caltech is an away game versus the Poets of Whittier College. Action is scheduled for this Wednesday, Apr. 12 at 7 p.m.
