Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. – Caltech Women's Water Polo faced the Whittier College Poets Wednesday night in the team's penultimate road game of the 2023 regular season.
The entire first half only saw four goals between the two teams despite a combined 22 shots, the goalposts and numerous saves keeping the ball out of the net. Beaver goalkeeper saved five shots in the opening 16 minutes, stopping a total of seven attempts for the third game this season, just one save shy of her season best.
Senior
Amanda Piyapanee put the Beavers on the scoreboard in the middle of the second period with an assist by
Emma Gurcan. Caltech then quickly responded to an early Whittier goal after halftime as
Riya Shrivastava assisted
Mia Mutadich for the team's second goal.
A late surge in the fourth quarter netted three unanswered Caltech goals, sparked by Gurcan's score halfway thorugh the fourth quarter off
Maya Dickson's assist. Gurcan then fed a pass to Mutadich for a goal, and finally
Madelyn Gilbert put away a powerplay goal in the final minute.
Caltech's discipline on defense also helped the team's effort, as Whittier was called for 10 exclusions compared to Caltech's seven and only managed one powerplay goal on the night.
